fishermen, lake victoriaOne week after the Lake Victoria Basin members of parliament raised serious complains about the kind of treatment the Kenyans fishermen undergo at the hands of Ugandan police forces in the islands of lake Victoria, the fishermen and area members of the county assemblies from several beaches in Migori County have come out to voice their concerns.

The fishermen from Sori, Muhuru Bay, Tagache and Lwanda Konyango have come out to raise complain of the kind of harassment that they encounter as they go about their fishing activities in several islands in the fresh water lake Victoria.

Benard Okombo, chairman of Tagache beach management Unit said that the fishermen are forced to eat raw fish and also part with heavy fines of Shs5,000 for every boat that operates up to Migingo island and other islands in the lake if they fail to do what the Ugandan police tell them in case they are arrested by Ugandan police.

The chairman added that the fishermen are arrested within the Kenyan territories by the Uganda police and then are driven and taken to police stations in Uganda and charged using the Ugandan laws something that has really disturbed them for many years.

Two area members of the county assembly of Migori whose wards stretch to the lake shores of Kachieng ward and Muhuru Bay ward said that the situation should be handled by president Uhuru Kenyatta who has the mandate to protect the nation and its territorial boundaries.

The two Brian Osodo of Kachieng and Evron Maira of Muhuru Bay said that if the harassment by the Ugandan police is not well handled by the Head of state then the people will take upon themselves to protect themselves in the best way possible.

17 fishermen were on Monday, 6 November arrested by the Ugandan authorities and taken to two different islands.

Nine fishermen are said to have been taken to Riabana Island, eight others at Kalangala Island, which are on the Ugandan side of Lake Victoria.
