The late Nyeri Governor, Wahome Gakuru with Deputy Governor Mutahi Kahiga

The clergy will on Monday conduct a cleansing ceremony right before Nyeri county’s Deputy Governor, Mutahi Kahiga takes oath of office.

Mr Kahiga’s swearing in ceremony was put off indefinitely on Thursday following the untimely death of Governor Wahome Gakuru.

Dr Gakuru died on Tuesday along the Murang’a-Thika road where his car hit a ‘killer guardrail.’ He died at the Thika Level 5 hospital.

Before him was Governor Nderitu Gachagua, who just like him died in office.

Gachagua passed on in February after losing a two year battle to pancreatic cancer while undergoing treatment in London.

Kahiga, a former teacher will today, become Nyeri’s fourth governor. His taking over the reigns has been met with a lot of opposition, with some feeling that he is underqualified.

Teachers on Friday threatened to take to the streets should he (Kahiga) not be sworn in immediately.

It has been said that the Deputy Governor is under pressure to give up the seat, claims that he has denied.

”I am not under any pressure from any leaders. My mind is clear and focused on the funeral and I can assure you that the swearing-in ceremony will take place,” he said.

Dr Gakuru will be buried on November 18 at his Kirichu home after his son completes his KCSE examinations.
