The Late Gabrielle Maina

The headmistress of Hillcrest School in Karen was killed on Thursday morning after she allegedly refused to hand over her phone to robbers who attacked her.

Gabrielle Maina who was returning to her home in the Miotoni area of Karen was shot twice on the neck and head, and phone grabbed before the killer robbers fled on a motorcycle.

The killing has shocked the expat community around Karen and those who have children or other relationships with Hillcrest School.

The Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said the death of the teacher was a “tragic event”

Gabrielle studied at University of New England in Australia, which also issued a statement mourning her death.

The school’s website said she arrived in Kenya in September 2015, after a successful career in New South Wales and overseas.

The school’s Board of Governors through its Chairman Bob Kikuyu issued a statement which read in part;

“It is with great sadness and shock that we are writing to let you know that Gabrielle Maina has been tragically killed whilst out walking this morning.

“We cannot give more details at this time as police are investigating this criminal act.”

The school was formerly owned by veteran politician Kenneth Matiba who later gave it up for sale after defaulting on bank loans.

Karen police commander Cunningham Suiyanka said that the police is investigating the incident.
