The Electoral Commission (IEBC) has fired the Procurement Director Lawy Aura for a delay in sourcing of ballot papers.

According to the IEBC chairman, Wafula Chebukati, Mr Aura was fired on May 29 but only released the details of his sacking on Tuesday.

Mr Aura was blamed for delays in procuring ballot papers that will be used in the August 8 polls.

This comes two weeks after High Court Justice George Odunga issued a temporary order suspending the decision of the procurement board, which annulled the ongoing tendering giving IEBC the go-ahead with the process.

Early in the year, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission warned that its preparations for the August elections had been thrown into uncertainty after the High Court nullified a Sh2.5 billion tender awarded to a Dubai-based firm for printing ballot papers .

Justice George Odunga in his verdict held that the tender, which was awarded to Al Ghurair Printing and Publishing Company, had failed to comply with the Election laws.

The case had been filed by the opposition’s CORD coalition against the commission and the Public Procurement Administrative Review Board.
