iPad Goes Officially on Sale in South Africa, Looking for Resellers in Kenya

Apple has finally launched the iPad for sale officially in South Africa. The flagship tablet computer has been on sale through the bacstreet market in SA and also through direct orders from retail and online stores based in Europe and US. Starting today, 28th January, Incredible Connections, Dion Wired and Apple stores in SA will be selling the iPad.

The following pricinf structures will be applied;

16GB WiFi – R4,399                                 16GB WiFi & 3G – R5 599
32GB WiFi – R5 399                                 32GB WiFi & 3G – R6 599
64GB WiFi – R6 399                                 64GB WiFi & 3G – R7 599

Apples seems to be looking to expand its reach in the continent with adverts for Apple products resellers appearing in today’s papers in Kenya. You can view the advert here. Apple still maintains Elite Kenya as its only premium reseller in the country.

I have talked to a source who knows much more about Apple and how they appoint their dealers and APRs (Premium Resellers). He says that it is not as easy as people might think. MCI which is in charge of getting the advert out, were in town two weeks ago and they infact informed Elite Kenya that they will have the advert out. The advert might just be for testing waters and seeing what kind of market Apple is in or is getting into.

And also to be an Apple Premium Reseller requires a lot in terms of investment in personnel and facilities. The margins might not be that great since iPhone wont be under the dealer and iPad is not yet launched. Apple wont allow you to sell a product they have not officially launched in your country so that should give potential investors an idea of what they are getting into.

What do you think?
