sgrAbout 1,000 striking Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) Naivasha workers have been laid off.

Chinese Communications and Construction Company fired the workers who they say were participating in an ‘illegal’ strike.

The workers were demanding for a better pay, which the company says ‘are much more than the ones under the regulation of wages amendment of 2017.’

In a notice dated 8 January, those who did not show up for work today (Monday) should consider themselves out of a job.

”All those employees [taking part] in the illegal strike and those who failed to resume work on January 8 … the management recognizes that they have resigned automatically,” the notice read in part.

Naivasha sub-county commissioner Isaac Masinde said that the workers’ demands were unconstitutional. He also noted that they did not issue a notice as is required by law.

”The workers have been misled by their leaders on the issue of salary increases. They should learn that there are set procedures in adjusting wages,” Mr Masinde said.

The Maai Mahiu railway sub-section workers on Saturday engaged the police in running battles causing a major traffic snarl up along the Maai-Mahiu-Narok road.
